How to take the Perfect LinkedIn Profile Picture

Headshot Photography

Is my profile picture really a big deal?

It should be! LinkedIn is used for many different purposes: networking, sales and recruitment. All of which will involve interacting with people you haven't yet met in person. So looking your best is key.

Here are some interesting stats about LinkedIn:

  1. Founded in 2003, it now has well over 500 million users, of which over half are active at least on a monthly basis. Some 40% log in on a daily basis.

  2. 80% of LinkedIn members consider professional networking key to their career success.

  3. 61 million users are senior level influencers and 40 million are decision makers.

  4. 43% of marketers say that they have sourced at least one customer from LinkedIn.

  5. Profiles with a professional headshot get 14 times more views.

First impressions count

So based on the stats above, getting that first impression right is even more crucial than you may have thought. After all, your profile online represents you as a professional and should reflect you in the best possible light.

So, I hear you ask, what makes the perfect LinkedIn headshot?

  1. A great headshot should be engaging. No matter where people are, we want them to engage with us; spreading our messages and widening our network. One of the first things they will see is your photo. It'll shape someone's first impression of you, so it needs to be engaging. Don't look off to the side, look straight at the camera to engage your audience.

  2. Personality. Confidence. Professionalism. When you've got someone's attention, your photograph needs to say all of these, which can be tricky. The most important thing of all is to look approachable.

  3. It should focus (pun intended) on your face. The size of your photo on LinkedIn is quite small, especially so on mobiles. So you should be clearly visible in the image. Your face needs to be the main attraction, filling a good proportion of the frame.

  4. It should be well composed. Here I mean no funky angles or shooting from above or below. The photo should be level with your face and not have a distracting background. You don't want people wondering where you are; you want them thinking about you and how you can help them.

  5. Most importantly, it should make you look good. Your photo needs to be well exposed, with no odd lighting. Ideally it won't be taken with an 'on-camera' flash as this will can often overexpose and even make some look almost ghostly! Getting skin tones right is also important - orange doesn't make for a great look...

So there you have it. Tick off every item on this list and you'll be on your way to many more profile views!
